The Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Drop-Off (POD) Program Installs Collection Boxes in Four Northern Michigan Counties

The Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Drop-Off Program (POD) provides permanent drop-off locations that allow residents to safely dispose of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and personal care products at no cost. Drop boxes are located at 16 law enforcement agencies in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmit counties The POD Program is currently the only program in Northern Michigan that accepts controlled substances.

POD Program drop-boxes accept:

  • prescription drugs, including controlled substances
  • over-the-counter medicines
  • pet medicines
  • nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals, herbs)
  • medicated ointments and lotions
  • liquid medications (if well-sealed or in a plastic bag)

POD Program drop boxes do not accept:

  • needles, lancets or pen needles (No sharps of any kind)
  • aerosol cans
  • bloody or infectious waste
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • thermometers
  • IV bags
  • trash
  • mail

Operation Medicine Cabinet™ Drop-Boxes Installed at 18 Locations

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office sponsors the Operation Medicine Cabinet program, which allows residents to dispose of expired and unused prescriptions, including controlled substances, at locations throughout Oakland County. Operation Medicine Cabinet boxes accept only prescription drugs. Over-the-counter drugs or medicine should not be submitted.

West Michigan Take Back Meds Program provides residents in Kent, Muskegon, and Ottowa counties with safe and convenient access to proper prescription drug disposal. While the local pharmacies that participate in the program accept many medications for disposal, only law enforcement locations provide secure drop-boxes that accept controlled substances. If you plan to drop off prescription drugs at a law enforcement location, be sure to call first to confirm hours of availability.
