College Students Misusing Pain Pills Often Suffer Depression

Many college students reporting abuse of prescription drugs also suffered from depression, according to a national study. <!--more-->Researchers surveyed 26,000 college students at 40 college campuses and found that 13% of the students reported nonmedical use of prescription drugs. “Those who said they had felt hopeless, sad, depressed or had considered suicide were much more likely to abuse prescription drugs,” indicates a Medline Plus article about the study. The researchers concluded that since sharing of prescription drugs is common among college students, more study of this situation is warranted.
